What is NEET?

NEET or the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is an India Medical entrance examination. It is conducted for students who wish to study any graduate medical course (MBBS), dental course (BDS) or postgraduate course (MD / MS) in government or private medical colleges in India.
NEET-UG replaced the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) and all individual MBBS exams conducted by states or colleges themselves.

After clearing the test students are eligible for admission to the following:

  • All India quota seats
  • State Government quota seats
  • Private, management and NRI quota seats in all Private medical/ dental colleges or any private/ deemed university.
Who conducts it?

NEET-UG (Undergraduate), for MBBS and BDS courses, is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
Undergraduate courses at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, Postgraduate Institute for Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, Jawarharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research JIPMER are outside the purview of NEET, as these institutes were set up by separate laws.
The above dates are as per the order of Supreme Court

Benefits of NEET
  • It gives an opportunity to meritorious students to seek admission in private colleges
  • Admission to private medical colleges would be fair, as claimed by those who have come up with this whole idea.
  • Students will not have to waste their time, money and energy running for various exams in different states. Nor will they have to prepare separately for different syllabi of various state exams.
  • Colleges across the nation will become more diverse, with students getting admitted from different states.
  • The student have to prepare according to a centralised syllabus, which hopefully will be designed by the centre and proposed shortly.
  • No more management quota, for one of the most critical jobs in the world..:)
