World Thinking Day

World Thinking Day is celebrated on 22nd February annually. This day is all about developing sisterhood and empowering the Girl Scouts around the globe. It is crucial for fostering among young people a sense of global awareness and to encourage them for community service and environmental stewardship. The primary goal of this day is to provide a forum for all women and girls to freely express their thoughts and participate in discussions about priority issues and offer global solutions.

How the world celebrates this day: World Thinking Day remains one of the most important dates in the calendar and every year the theme of the event encourages members to think on various evils that affects the society especially the girls. The theme of this year 2023 is “Our World, Our Peaceful Future: The Environment, Peace, and Security.”

History: It is a celebration of ten million girls worldwide that has taken place on every 22 February since 1926. The name was changed from “Thinking Day” to “World Thinking Day” in 1999 at the 30th World Conference held in Ireland to truly understand the universal nature of this day. The tremendous amount of efforts and hard work put forth by girl scouts and girl guides around the world is the reason why World Thinking Day has become such a worldwide celebrated event around the world.

If we talk about Today’s scenario girls are facing many issues around the world like:

  • Violence against women and girls
  • Gender pays gap & digital gender divide
  • Period stigma
  • Underrepresentation as leaders
  • Gender discrimination
  • Sexual abuse and harassment
  • Girls Education

Girls’ education and impact on society: Educating a girl in present can be a miracle in future for the society. Higher education among girls helps to reduce crime rates as these girls are going to be the first teachers for kids in future. Education empowers marginalized women and helps them build better futures for themselves and their families. When a country invests in girls’ education than it transforms that country from a common nation to a prosperous nation.

It contributes to more stable society that give all individuals including boys and men the opportunity to fulfil their potential. But educating a girl is more than just to send them to schools. In reality it is about providing girls a safe environment in classrooms and in society. It is about allowing them to choose the subjects and careers they want to pursue for themselves including those in which they are often under represented like STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers options.
